Even as a little girl growing up, the kitchen in our house was always the meeting place for friends and family and has continued to be that place in my home for my friends and family. My kids are forever bringing their friends over and we all visit around the kitchen island. It only makes sense that I would come to flourish in the heart of our home, the kitchen!
My mom always made our birthday cakes growing up so when it was my son's first birthday, of course, I was going to make his! It was a complete disaster and looked nothing like I had pictured in my mind and I was sobbing into the bowl of buttercream. Cake decorating is most definitely a skill, and it was a skill I did not have! I remember my oldest daughter's 3rd birthday I made her a Strawberry Shortcake cake and I had to tell everyone who it was to have resembled as it nowhere near looked like the poor girl. It was not until the Pandemic closed everyone's businesses that I found my niche. It was right at my son's 11th birthday. I made him a chocolate candy cake and had bought way too many ingredients. I did not want all that candy left in my house! I made a post on social media that I wanted to make, and gift, a replica of my son's cake to a family that was affected by the work closures for their child. I had an overwhelming response and Buttercream and Berries began. I started out by making cakes for those who could not at the time afford the extra costs to purchase cakes at my exact cost as I believe all kids and adults alike deserve cake and it was such a difficult time for all of us. I used this time to sharpen my skills, develop new ones, and on top of all that, to build my confidence that I was good at this.
That's the short form notes about how I got my start. I am completely self-taught aside from thousands of YouTube videos and many fail along the way. I have had to take breaks due to schooling and a second business that I run, but I keep coming back to cakes and have decided now that this is what I am meant to be doing, and have huge plans and aspirations for Buttercream and Berries.
A bit about me on a personal level! I am a full-time mamma to 3 girls and 1 boy. Sylvan Lake is our home and we love it here. It is community and family-centered and my children have thrived here. The support of my small business has been extremely humbling and I am so beyond thankful for it!
We live for summer and all things outside. Hiking, camping, fishing... you name it we are there in the summer! Working from home comes with its perks of being able to schedule around our nomadic "no plans are the best plans" life. My children are quick to help in the kitchen and are very excited for the future of Buttercream and Berries to move to a storefront. Until then, everyone pitches in, deals with a messy kitchen and we spend even more time together as I am now again able to be here full-time with them while doing what I love most!
